ADA, NFPA 10 & Fire Marshal Compliance — What the Code Actually Requires
Most failed inspections on cabinet scope come down to three things: wrong mounting height, wrong travel distance between extinguishers, or wrong cabinet rating for the location. The code is specific. Here's the short version GCs and fire marshals actually quote on walkthroughs.
ADA Mounting Height
ADA requires the extinguisher operating handle no higher than 48 inches from the floor for forward reach, or 54 inches for side reach. Cabinet placement must put the handle inside that window — measure the unit, not just the cabinet.
NFPA 10 Travel Distance
NFPA 10 requires a maximum travel distance of 75 feet to the nearest extinguisher for most Class A hazards. High-hazard occupancies require closer spacing. Cabinet placement on commercial drawings is driven by this calculation — not aesthetics.
Outdoor & Weather-Rated Locations
Outdoor and high-humidity locations require a cabinet rated for the environment. Painted steel will fail in Florida coastal exposure — use UV-resistant plastic (Cato Chief, MARK Series) or stainless steel construction for any outdoor or salt-air mount.

Can you quote a full spec package for a multi-floor build?
Yes — this is a significant share of our work. Send us the cabinet schedule from the architectural drawings or the fire protection plans and we'll quote the full package, confirm lead times across the SKU list, and coordinate phased delivery to match your construction schedule. Multi-phase builds can run on staggered shipments so you're not warehousing cabinets you don't need until Phase 3.
What's the difference between recessed, semi-recessed, and surface mount?
Recessed — installed completely inside the wall, only the door is visible. Flush finish. Requires wall cutting. Default for new commercial construction.
Semi-recessed — partially set into the wall with the front projecting slightly. Used when wall depth doesn't support full recess.
Surface mount — mounted entirely on the wall surface. No wall cutting required. The right choice for concrete, block, or retrofit installs.
Are your cabinets ADA compliant?
